1) Multitrip Commuter Line Card
I swear to God this is important, many people would prefer the single trip card, but when it comes to exploring, you wouldn't want to queue like five miles just to get a piece of white card, it doesn't worth your time my pals, get the multitrip one.
They sell it for 50k, the card price is actually 20k but you get 30k inside (which basically can get you anywhere in jabodetabek)
When you no longer use it, you can either keep it as souvenir or you can sell it to another passenger for 20k
Fun stuff: if you're coming on weekdays, try the rush hour train (7am-9am to North/Jakarta direction or 4pm-7pm to South/Bogor direction), it's nothing like you've imagined
2) Some Spare Change
Indonesians would proudly call it "receh" (re--as in 'ray', ceh--as in 'ch' of 'check' with an h at the end of it) it's like 5k, 2k, 1k... You'd need that if you're exploring with busway, busway fare is 3.5k anywhere, and if you're earlier (before 7am), you can get special 2k. Oh, and Indonesians are known as the most philanthropic people on earth, you'll find beggars and street musicians (they'd be more aggressive to you foreigners) mostly anywhere on the streets and street side food stalls, you'd want to give them something like 500 or 1k.
Fun stuff: you can request a song to street musician who comes towards your table at the restaurant for "extra receh" lol
3) Umbrella
The weather around here is always on PMS, it can be very hot, like most tropical zones of this funny earth, and the heat here is nothing compared to your most aggravating summer, avoid going out at noon, the sun can possibly kill you (if you must get out at this ungodly hour, you'd want to use at least SPF30 sunscreen) oh and it can also rain all of sudden so umbrella can be your best friend around here. But I think most foreigners here (mostly american/european) won't use umbrella because they think the sun is being friendly, but some people like east asian people will use it, you decide mate :-)
P.S: if you forgot to bring your own umbrella and it's raining, usually in public places there are some kids who offer umbrella service, we call them 'ojek payung', you can use the umbrella to the nearest bus stop/train station and they will follow you from behind, you just need to pay like 2k. (see the picture above)

I mean you got to bring your own bottle of water, AND REMEMBER, you can't refill it on most taps around here, you'll get diarrhea. You can buy bottled water on the streets for 2k or 3k (the good water brands start with an A), but if you're concern about earth's problem, you can bring your own bottle (at least a liter) of water and I think you won't be dehydrated.
Fun stuff: try coconut water instead of mineral water, it's called "es kelapa" here
5) Keds
No matter how fashionable you are, you wouldn't want to wear flat shoes when exploring this city, much less high heels. It's simple, the pedestrian is not oh-so-friendly to your feet, I personally would recommend hiking boots but it would be a bit unfashionable on the malls, so keds and running shoes are pretty enough.

P.S: keds are really good when you're in a hurry around here, if you're heading to a particular occasion you can always pack up your dress shoes :-) (from personal experience)
